Professor Jardine » Appointed External Examiner Professor Andrew K.S. Jardine has been recently appointed external examiner by the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering of the University of Pretoria, South Africa, for their course Maintenance Practice. He also has been appointed by the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, University of the West Indies, to be the external examiner for their MSc degree in Engineering Asset Management. |

Physical Asset Management Certificate Program, 2011 The University’s annual 8-day Physical Asset Management Certificate program was again a success with participants coming from all corners of Canada (Newfoundland & Labrador to British Columbia to the North West territories), the USA and Dubai. Industries represented were mining, utilities (gas and electricity), physical plant, consulting and aluminum smelting. In addition to the class room work participants enjoyed program dinners at both the Faculty Club and the CN Tower’s revolving restaurant. IBM was the sponsor of the program. The next PAM program will be held from May 28th to June 1st 2012 at the same venue.

Professor Jardine » Honorary Visiting Professorship Professor Andrew K.S. Jardine has accepted a three-year extension of his Honorary Visiting Professorship in Operation and Maintenance Engineering at Luleå University of Technology, Luleå, Sweden. At Luleå, he works with Professor Uday Kumar, Head of Operation and Maintenance Engineering and Dr. Ulla Gronlund, Head of the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Natural Resources Engineering. The appointment is for the period October 1, 2011 to September 30, 2014. |

NEC was the Executive Sponsor; other sponsors included IFS from Sweden, the Infraspection Institute and Plant Services from the US, and BANAK and PEMAC from Canada. The more than 80 participants came from Australia, Canada, Colombia, Chile, Germany, Hong Kong, The Netherlands, Sweden, and the United States. Some had hands-on backgrounds in industry; others were academics and researchers. This presented a unique opportunity for like-minded people from around the world to share insights from the perspectives of both industry and academia.

Jardine who awarded an NSERC Discovery Grant of $65,000.00 per year, for the project entitled Evidence based asset management for 5 years. Prof. Jardine » NSERC-CIHR Collaborative Health Research Projects (CHRP)
Prof. Andrew Jardine was awarded an NSERC-CIHR CHRP grant for a project titled Risk factors and optimization model for breast cancer screening. This is a collaborative project between the Centre for Maintenance Optimization and Reliability Engineering (C-MORE), and Co-PI Prof. Bart Harvey and Co-Investigators, Prof. Anthony Miller from the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, Prof. Jeffrey Hoch from the Department of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation, and Dr. Terrence Sullivan of Cancer Care Ontario. The project received funding of $411,638 over three years primarily to support a PDF (Dr. Sharareh Taghipour) and research students. Read the news at the NSERC and the University of Toronto. June 2, 2011 Physical Asset Management: Initiatives that Work, held May 30 - June 3 at the University of Toronto The most recent course, Physical Asset Management: Initiatives that Work, held May 30 - June 3 at the University of Toronto, attracted 35 participants from Canada, the USA, Trinidad, and Thailand. Under the direction of Dr. Ali Zuashkiani, C-MORE offers Physical Asset Management Certificate programs to those working in industry. The objective is to combine high quality content delivered by leading instructors with the academic rigour of the University of Toronto. Courses are held at the University of Toronto and throughout the world. For example, in the past year, C-MORE has offered classes in Iran and Chile. |

May 9, 2011 Sharareh Taghipour and Lorna Wong » Annual Reliability and Maintainability Symposium (RAMS) 2011 Congratulations to Sharareh Taghipour whose paper titled Trend analysis of the power law process with censored data received 1st Place in the 2011 Tom Fagan Reliability & Maintainability Symposium Student Paper Competition. Congratulations also to Lorna Wong whose paper titled Incorporating Repair Information into Maintenance Optimization Models for Repairable Systems received 3rd Place in the same Student Paper Competition. Sharareh and Lorna are students of Prof. Andrew Jardine. |

May 9, 2011 Sharareh Taghipour » American College of Clinical Engineering (ACCE) 2011 Congratulations to Sharareh Taghipour whose paper titled Prioritization of medical equipment for maintenance decisions received 3rd Place in the 2011 American College of Clinical Engineering (ACCE) student paper award. This award is given to an individual currently a student in a Clinical Engineering or related graduate program who wrote a paper that contributes significantly to the body of knowledge in Clinical Engineering. Sharareh is a student of Prof. Andrew Jardine. |

April 27, 2011 MIE Industrial Partnership Dinner On April 27 at the Faculty Club, MIE brought together faculty members and industry collaborators, to thank them for their contributions to research excellence. MIE is also the first department within the Prof. Jean Zu welcomed guests and acted as the evening's MC. Dean Cristina Amon thanked industry for their involvement and highlighted the strengths of the Faculty. Prof. Ridha Ben Mrad, faculty representative to the Industry Board of Advisors, welcomed board members in attendance: David Poirier (MIE 9T1), CEO, The Poirier Group, and Chair of the Industry Board of Advisors; Adjunct professor Eswar Prasad, Chairman of Piemades, Inc.; Cameron Ower (MIE 8T3), Director, Research and Development for MDA. The board also includes Ted Maulucci (MIE 8T9), CIO at Tridel Corporation.
Prof. Chul B. Park discussed the success that can be achieved when academia and industry work together as exemplified by the MPML consortium. Mr. Norm Hann, echoed these strengths, noting his involvement with C-MORE (Andrew K.S. Jardine). Prof. Mike Munro closed the night by encouraging industry participation in the MIE Capstone Design course. |

Professor Andrew K.S. Jardine has been awarded an NSERC Engage grant ($25,000) in support of a collaboration with Maintenance Assistant Inc. for the project titled "A framework to transform a web-based computerized maintenance management system into an evidence based asset management decision tool". 



Faculty to form an Industry Board of Advisors who held their second meeting this year, earlier in the day.
